Puur en Edel
De oudste haardplaten of kachelplaten stammen uit de tweede helft van de 15e eeuw. Haardplaten zijn van oorsprong luxe artikelen, uitsluitend bestemd voor koninklijke en adellijke huizen. Vandaar dat de vroege haardplaten de wapens en schilden van koning en adel tonen. Later kregen de platen meer decoratieve ontwerpen zoals klassieke en natuurtaferelen.
De haardplaat heeft vanouds een tweetal belangrijke functies:
1. Hij beschermt de achterwand van het vuur tegen barsten en afbrokkelen.
2. Het dikke gietijzer neemt warmte op die anders verloren gaat en geeft deze weer af aan de kamer. Een haardplaat werkt daarmee als een radiator en kan daarmee de efficiëntie van het haardvuur met 50% verhogen. Hoe dikker een plaat, hoe langer en zachter deze uitstralende werking.
De open haard haalt daarbij nooit de efficiëntie van een kachel. Wel is het stoken van hout een CO2-arme manier van energieproductie. De CO2 productie van een haardvuur is ongeveer hetzelfde als die opgenomen werd tijdens de groei van de boom. Zolang het haardvuur niet over grote afstanden wordt verplaatst met behulp van fossiele brandstof, zijn de CO2 emissies van een haardvuur aanzienlijk lager dan die van fossiele brandstoffen. Het stoken van hout dat anders naar de stort zou worden vervoerd is helemaal milieubewust.
Een haard biedt warmte, geborgenheid en stijl, zelfs nu de haard vaak niet meer de belangrijkste bron van warmte is voor de mens. Een antieke haardplaat of kachelplaat versterkt dit door de eerlijkheid van het materiaal, de tijdloosheid, schoonheid en historische betekenis van de plaat.
Ook wordt de antieke haardplaat voor andere functies dan de haard gebruikt, bijvoorbeeld als spatscherm boven een fornuis, of gewoon als een elegante decoratie aan de muur.

Pure and Noble
The oldest fireplace fireback dates back to 1460 and was used by French royalty. Originally, cast iron fire backs were luxury items to be used exclusively by the royalty and aristocracy. Thus the early fireplace firebacks show the crowns and coats of arms of royalty and aristocracy. Later the fireback received more decorative designs depicting classical stories, nature, and rural lives.
The fireback has always had two important functions:
1. It protects the backside of the fireplace against cracking and chipping.
2. The thick cast iron keeps the heat that would otherwise be lost and gives this heat back to the room. A cast iron fireback thus works like a radiator and may increase the efficiency of the fire by as much as 50%. The thicker or heavier the cast iron, the longer and softer this radiative effect.
A fireplace can never match the efficiency of a stove. However, burning wood is a low carbon option. The carbon dioxide produced when burning is approximately the same as the carbon dioxide absorbed by the tree during its lifetime. As long as the wood is not transported over long distances using fossil fuels, the CO2 emission of a fire is significantly lower than that of fossil fuels.
A fireplace provides warmth, security and style, even if the fireplace isn't usually the main source of heating anymore. An antique fireback reinforces this by the honesty of the material and its timelessness, beauty and historical significance.
